General Festival InformationForty performances, a film festival, an artisan/craft show and a full roster of workshops, parties and dances are all slated for one glorious week in August on 650 lush green acres in Michigan. This year's line-up features Michigan's signature combination of new blood and longtime beloveds, representing every genre and generation through the sounds you hear from the stages as well as from the womyn you meet on the wooded path. Returning womyn know the magic of Michigan is as much what happens off the stages as on them. Everywhere you turn - from the womon-built stages to the outdoor kitchen serving thousands to the follow-spot operator up high in the scaffolding - Festival is living evidence of what womyn are capable of creating. The tangible creative energy that is everywhere on the land explodes into spontaneous woodland parties, parades with outrageous costumes, and performance art on every path. Healthy food, clean air, green woods, art and music will recharge batteries you didn't even know were fading. The festival is on an expansive stretch of land - a square mile - so you can hike to a remote campsite or locate yourself in one of the many tent or RV neighborhoods with womyn from around the globe. If you're new at camping, as many of us are the first year, or just don't consider yourself a camper - not to worry. We have plenty of comforts and conveniences to support the urban camper's enjoyment of this time in the woods. We provide a well-organized system of community services and shuttles, three vegetarian meals a day, open-air hot showers, and beautiful safe campgrounds. All activities, concerts, meals, workshops and services are included in your ticket purchase. Whether it's your first time or your thirtieth, a week at Festival is a gift-week to yourself. Bring your heart, your humor, your passion for genuine community living and over-the-top spontaneous fun. And all day, every day, for one magnificent week, let the heartbeat of womyn's creativity be the sound of August.
Events and ActivitiesThe Festival week begins with Intensive Workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday that range from half-day workshops to weeklong series taught by womyn with distinctive talents and expertise. Thursday kicks off a four-day open forum of workshops led by these teachers and others attending the Festival that provides a rich avenue for resource sharing and community networking. If you would like to present a workshop, download a workshop registration off the web or contact us for a form. Within the Community Center complex you'll find a variety of community activities and events, along with networking space for Teens, Over 50's, Jewish Womyn, Deaf and HOH Womyn and womyn from other countries. Offering community, celebrations, workshops and special events, the Womyn of Color Tent provides an ongoing opportunity for exploration and reclamation of our many and varied traditions.
Community ServicesOur community services are conceived, built, and delivered by every womon who attends Festival. Your time on workshift (everyone does two, one for the weekenders) is an opportunity to connect, to contribute, and to be involved in the inner workings of a city built from the ground up by feminist values. This city relies upon the unique energies of each womon to bring our conscious community to life, and the shared experience of thoughtful living extends from our annual community out into the larger world. The Festival Kitchen prepares three delicious meals a day, offering vegetarian specialties to everyone attending. Shuttles bring you and your gear into the Festival interior upon your arrival, and circle the Land providing rides throughout the week. There is a full system of First Aid care and an active peer-support system for recovery and general emotional needs. Disabled Womyn's Resources are organized through DART, a campground and resource area for womyn with disabilities. (DART campground and services are available by pre-registration only.) Sign Language Interpretation service is available for all concerts, requested workshops and other activities. Helping hands are available to assist older womyn and disabled womyn with their camping gear. Childcare is available in three different areas. Sprouts Family Campground provides a day camp and family campground for moms and all young children through four years of age. Gaia Girls Camp offers daily activities and supervision through the evening concerts for girls five and over. Brother Sun Boys Camp operates from 8am to midnight with a program of outings; crafts, cookouts, music, sports and campfires for boys aged five through ten. Located in a mix of forest and meadow, Brother Sun offers a fun, welcoming and secluded area for boys while preserving womyn's space in all other Festival areas. Please respect that all boys five and over, and their families, camp in Brother Sun for the week. In order to participate in any of the childcare areas, all children must be pre-registered by July 21st. If you would like to access childcare while at Festival you will need to complete registration forms in addition to purchasing your child's ticket. If you're new to the Festival, we have a sheet of Tips for First Timers that you can request or locate on our website that will describe everything from the arrival process to handy camping ideas.
