I've never run at Michigan but this year my goal is to run the Saturday Mormon Lois Lane race. This will require getting up at a reasonable hour on Saturday. But more importantly training so I am ready and can then get a time running that is faster than most people's walking speed. I plan to start the Couch to 5k (C25k) training plan this week. http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Anyone else in?

Let's give each other support and dîscuss our progress in this thread.

good for you!
i did my 1st race ever in Michigan. horrible time, but i finished it. walking. then started doing 5k's on fairly reg basis. last spring my partner & I did the Couch 2 5K training. have coached it twice since. will be doing the Lois Lane again this year, walk/running. a number of womyn do this every year.
think they have the runners, then walkers go now. i'll be in the middle between the 2. hope to see you there!

I'm doing c25k right now! I'm going to run my first 5k in June with my lady. I have always wanted to do the Lois Lane, but I think this year it might actually happen bc my runner gf is a good motivator (as long as we can get up that early the day after the zone variety show! :)

we only have a few more weeks of official training, then we go back to just meeting up twice a week & getting 3 miles in each night. sometimes fast, sometimes slow. goal is to just get it done.

Latrice and I are planning a running/walking workshop for early in the week, a lois lane warmup. It'll give womyn a chance to meet others for a run/walk, perhaps make connections for more runs during the week. We'll talk about how to get started running/walking, where to run on the land, the ll run. That's the plan. Gotta get the workshop request in. What else would you like to see/hear/do at a running/walking workshop?

outsider - I love it!

I'm determined to stick with running...my concerns right now are where to buy running gear (pants, bras) for fat women, injuries that can happen and what to do about them (especially since I don't have insurance :/), how to prep for a 10K, a half marathon, or even a marathon (!!!), what to expect while running a big organized race in the real world, advice from seasoned runners...yep :)

Trixie and Jelly - good ideas for the workshop! I'm taking notes. I am SO bad about stretching too. I'm definitely not a pro, but I'll gather together info, make some copies, have some fest maps with some routes marked... Mostly, it'll be informal, get together, chat, run/walk, hopefully make connections for more run/walks during fest.

Just remember not to do too much stretching before... unless you warm up first. Stretching cold muscles can lead to more injuries. Google it. Best bet is to do a five minute warm up, then stretch, then the run/walk, then a big long stretch session. :)

Trixie, you have inspired me. I can't promise I will be ready by August, but I am going to start C25K too.

I've been wanting to for a long time.

In my new job I am on my feet 8+ hours a day, which I haven't had to do in over a year. It hurts! LOL But I'm not giving up on the running!

Righto Beth. I just added stretching to our after run/walk workshop plan.

Anyone a stretching pro?

The workshop plan is to gather by the community center 8, 8:30, do quick intros, have a community center rep there to answer any Lois Lane 5k questions, group by speed and distance, walk or run 5k, more or less, meet back up for stretching, breakfast and running/walking chit-chat. My main motivation was to give womyn the opportunity to meet others to run/walk with throughout the week so I'm requesting to have the workshop first thing Thurs morning, the first day of general workshops. I'll make a handout with some running/walking resources and websites for womyn and a fest map with some routes and approximate distances marked.

My favorite thing is trail running. I love fest for the opportunity to run on beautiful trails surrounded by womyn and camping. Fun!!

I thought of that Trixie. I'm used to running early because it's hot here and has to happen early. Also, the Lois Lane run/walk is early. And, I like the idea of early then breakfast together. I like running before breakfast. At the same time, I knew some would prefer later. You can do it! Get up, run, eat, nap. :) Or maybe you can meet up with us as we pass through or by the zone.

I actually prefer running in the morning too because it's cooler, less busy in the streets, and...well, I smoke and I like to run before I smoke any cigarettes for the day. (ALTHOUGH me wanting to get more into running and someday going longer distances means I am cutting down on my cigarettes...small steps :)

I haven't had breakfast at fest since 2007 so it would be nice to do again LOL
