Although this is not about MichFest, I am a lesbian who is a jazz activist with a focus on female instrumentalists in jazz. I'm hoping that posting this announcement here will help garner some interviewees that I seek while in Philly next month.
I'm going from Cali-2-Philly to document OUTBEAT JAZZ FESTIVAL next month. OUTBEAT is the first Queer Jazz Festival to take place in the U.S. - or anywhere.
Here's my press release:
Seeking Jazz Musicians to Interview in Philadelphia Sept. 18-21, 2014
joey brite Artist Branding & Promotion at BehindTheCurtainProductions
I will be documenting OUTBEAT and I'd like to set up interviews with any & all jazz musicians willing to be on camera and address two issues: the state of female jazz instrumentalists in the U.S. & abroad being hired as headliners, and...the reason for there being so few gay male jazz instrumentalists that are 'out'. I've begun examining the roots of jazz culture with it's sexism and homophobia, and created this clip back in May of this year that caused a bit of controversy in the jazz world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFZ5JCZkuZ8
I will be creating a series of mini documentaries that will contain these interviews as well as portions of OUTBEAT and get this online for free public viewing access before end of November, 2014.
I'll be staying at a hotel near all the activities of the festival & conducting interviews there during the daylight hours of Thursday Sept. 18-21st.
If you have some thoughts to contribute to this project I'd welcome your participation. If you're interested, please contact me directly: firstname.lastname@example.org
Thank you ahead for your consideration!
